Chapter 10

The next day, Terran continued his exploration of the city to gather information. We spoke about sending a letter to Jerra but decided it was too risky. King Avyken and his spies most likely monitored every message that left his city.

While Terran was away, I stayed put in the inn, quite enjoying the physical work. I missed the bustle and commotion of a city, and my labor paid for our room and meals throughout the day.

Gazing out the front window, the streets were packed with visitors for Legend’s Day. The inn remained busy. Quinn offered cheap prices for a quality experience which attracted customers from all over, even some who lived near the inner city.

The men from the fight disappeared sometime in the night because there was no sign of them when I checked the following morning. I hoped they wouldn’t return. I didn’t want to explain to Quinn I used her land as a fight arena. Bending down to pick up a dropped paper, I winced as I straightened up. My ribs were bruised from Terran’s hits last night and this morning, I slept in because I was so fatigued after our match. I was grateful I was on the last day of my period. My body didn’t need more cramps along with the sore ribs.

As night fell, Terran strolled through the bar’s door with two men and one woman trailing behind. The tanned man with honey hair was tall, though not quite reaching Terran’s height. He surveyed his surroundings with skepticism while the other handsome man with mahogany skin held an easy smile, eyes crinkling with humor.

The pretty, red haired woman chuckled with Terran as they shared a joke walking towards the bar. All three were obviously trained in combat with their athletic builds and balanced strides. Never mind the weapons on their person. From just a brief glance, small knives and wires hung from their belts. Under their clothes, I’d guarantee, more were obscured.

Surprise ran through me. Was Terran part of a hiring assassination group? Or are they bounty hunters that work together? No one walked around with an arsenal like this.

Terran never mentioned friends in the city, maybe they met unexpectedly and came across each other while he explored the city’s walls. No way. Something in my gut told me Terran had somehow planned this meetup, and I had missed the signs. Was this why he didn’t complain about being chosen for this mission?

Placing the polished glass on the shelf and hanging the rag on a hook, I gave them a tentative smile as the group found seats at the bar.

Terran quickly introduced them. “Avira, these are some people I travel with on occasion. This is Bo.” He used his thumb to point at a man with honey hair who remained impassive. “The one next to him is Pol.” Pol flashed an easy smile and then punched Terran in the bicep, “He’s fucking with us.” He explained to me. “The four of us grew up together.
